The "I:33" Wooden Buckler


"The I:33" buckler shown is made of laminated plywood covered with linen on either side. The steel boss is riveted in place, and the rawhide is stitched using heavy grade artificial sinew. The buckler has a 32 cm diameter (with rawhide) and has a boss with a 12.5 cm (5in) inside diameter. This buckler is slightly larger than "The Yeoman" steel buckler at 30 cm (12in) due to the rawhide edging.


This particular model was inspired by its namesake, Walpurgis Fechtbuch, otherwise known as MS I:33. It was written around 1320 in the first half of the 14th century. Folio 4r, shown in the example below, gives a good view of the bucklers through the Prima Custodia (first ward) and the Krucke (crutch).
